The Semmering Base Tunnel is currently one of Austria’s most important infrastructure projects. The 27.3-kilometre-long tunnel will connect Vienna and Graz and make an important contribution to a modern rail network. Behind the scenes, a high-performance fibre optic infrastructure will ensure technical connectivity and safe, reliable operation.
We take a look behind the scenes of this major project and show how gabocom microduct systems are being used throughout the tunnel infrastructure.
In addition to the tunnel tubes themselves, the technical equipment plays a crucial role. Numerous communication, monitoring and tunnel safety systems need to be interconnected along the entire length of the tunnel. The fibre optic cables required for this purpose are routed through speedpipe, creating a flexible, secure and future-proof infrastructure.
All communication technology is brought together in the tunnel’s cross-passages. This is where the fibre optic management system is installed. The fibre optic cables routed through the speedpipe are distributed and integrated into distribution and splicing systems. At the same time, the infrastructure provides the basis for reliable operation and future expansion.
The Semmering Base Tunnel is impressive not only because of its length. A total of around 186 kilometres of speedpipe bundles are being installed. As each bundle contains several individual ducts, this creates an extensive infrastructure. Not all speedpipe will be populated immediately. Additional capacity will remain available as a reserve, enabling future expansion without the need for complex retrofitting.
For everyone involved in the project, the Semmering Base Tunnel is far more than just a structure. The tunnel represents technical innovation, long-term investment in transport infrastructure and the highest standards of availability and safety. We are therefore all the more delighted that our microduct systems are part of this pioneering project.
