Energy and Resource Management
Our focus is on the efficient use of energy and the integration of renewable energy sources. Through technical measures and the continuous optimisation of our processes, we work towards a reliable and efficient energy supply.
For many product groups, we use high-quality HDPE materials that meet the requirements of long-term fibre optic infrastructure.
We exclusively use electricity from renewable energy sources and have operated our own photovoltaic system since 2025.
Material Circulation and Reuse
Material residues generated during extrusion and injection moulding processes are collected, processed and directed to appropriate reuse applications.
Unused material is further processed either by gabocom or by specialised partners.
Our products are designed as mono-material systems. This enables the materials used to be directed to material recovery processes at the end of their service life.
Where possible, we reuse wooden drums and other packaging materials. For wooden drums, we offer a return scheme together with a specialised partner.
Durable Products
Our microducts and duct bundles are designed for a service life of at least 50 years.
Their long service life supports the long-term operation of passive fibre optic networks and can reduce the need for additional civil works during use.
Efficient Production in Germany
Our production processes are designed for the efficient use of energy, water and materials. Through the continuous optimisation of our processes, we work to further reduce resource consumption in manufacturing.
Production at our Niederwinkling site enables close cooperation with our customers and partners as well as short distances within our supply and production processes.
Responsible Sourcing
Materials and suppliers are selected on the basis of defined quality, social and environmental standards. In doing so, we follow the requirements of our Ethics, Social and Environmental Charter.
For many product groups, we use high-quality high-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials that meet the requirements of long-term fibre optic infrastructure.
Suppliers are evaluated according to defined criteria and reviewed on a regular basis.
Corporate Social Responsibility is an integral part of our corporate strategy. We continuously work on improving our products, processes and manufacturing operations. The following examples illustrate selected measures and developments from recent years.
Water treatment
Our water treatment system has been optimised through, among other things, the conversion to free cooling systems with winter relief operation. The use of low ambient temperatures additionally contributed to reducing electricity demand.
The implementation of a modern system and the decommissioning of outdated cooling towers significantly improved water treatment performance.
In addition, operational programmes were optimised. Despite increasing production volumes and the resulting increase in material requiring cooling, resource consumption remained stable due to the modernisation of the cooling system.
Furthermore, our cooling water is treated and reused within a closed-loop system.
Electricity consumption
We exclusively use electricity from renewable energy sources.
In 2014, gabocom set the goal of reducing electricity consumption per kilogram of produced material by 3% by 2020.
One simple yet effective measure was the conversion to LED lighting. In many areas of the company, this was further supported by automated on/off controls. In addition, the use of daylight supports efficient lighting of working areas.
Significant energy savings were achieved through reducing compressed air consumption, replacing a production hall compressor and optimising the entire compressed air network, including regular leak detection. Further savings resulted from replacing compressed-air equipment with energy-efficient blowers.
Additional reductions in energy demand and improvements in efficiency were achieved through insulation measures on processing equipment. Regular inspections and maintenance of insulation systems also contribute significantly to reducing electricity consumption.
Thanks to these and many other measures, as well as the strong commitment of our employees, the target was achieved as early as 2015, just one year after it was set. By 2020, gabocom had reduced electricity consumption per kilogram of produced material by more than 14%.
Packaging Materials
We exclusively use cardboard packaging made from 100% recycled material.
In addition, changes to the packaging method for palletised goods significantly reduced the demand for PE film, saving approximately 4.5 tonnes of film per year.
As early as 2014, gabocom’s energy management system was certified according to DIN EN ISO 50001.
In 2015, our environmental management system was certified according to DIN EN ISO 14001. The responsible use of energy, resources and emissions is an integral part of our corporate principles.
Regular audits and the continuous optimisation of operational processes are standard practice at gabocom. New internal environmental and energy objectives are defined each year.
